Johnny Gray (Buster Keaton) is a train-driver in a southern State and he has two great loves: a girl (Anabelle Lee) and a steam engine (The General).

In 1861, when the War of Independence breaks out, Johnny tries to enlist, but the army considers that he will be more useful working on the rearguard. However, Anabelle believes he is a coward and rejects him. The train-driver can only prove his true worth when a northern commando infiltrated into the confederate ranks steals ‘The General’ from him and kidnaps Anabelle. Johnny does not hesitate to board another steam engine to pursue the Yanks and get both of his beloveds back.

Did you know…

Buster Keaton was the favourite comic of the surrealists and the generation of 27, in preference to Chaplin, whom they thought sentimental. Since 1989 The General has been preserved at the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress of the United States because of its cultural, historic, and aesthetic significance.
