"Principiantes" is a contemporary stage creation practice inviting 10 women over 60 to take part in the construction of a collective group, activating their bodies, voices, boosting ways to be together on a stage where they go from a highly individual “I” to a collective “we”.
Ballerina and choreographer Carlota Mantecón accompanies them in this process, providing dance and performative tools besides activating the practice which is finally shared with the audience as a stage device.

“Principiantes” came about from the desire to give value to the creation of a collective body with women over 60. A group activated with amateur non-academic bodies where we question the value of a moving body in a collective act, i.e. a body activated between the autonomy of the unique and power of the plural.
The women have seen how their flesh has turned flaccid in a society where the image of eternal youth functions and reigns. Hence with this practice the opening of a space of freedom is propitiated from the body among the mature ones. At the end of this process we meet up with the audience’s look which becomes complicit with the practice as it forms a circle with them inside the stage box, thus becoming part of this collective act.

Ballerina and choreographer, Carlota Mantecón works among disciplines within the field of choreography, dance, performance and curatorship.
She’s currently developing “The Voices” process where she’s researching vocal vibration from a plural phantasmagorical act. She has worked with performer and violinist Luz Prado on projects like: “Un mismo movimiento”, research on footprint and unconscious memory while moving and touching; “Dance, no goal“, a project on the re-significance and stories of dance with older dancers; and “Esto no es una prueba de sonido”, a dance solo or sound duet aiming to amplify the sound bodies make on moving.
She’s been carrying out the stage practice of “Principiantes” in which over 90 local amateur women over 60 have taken part, stretching the possible crosses between theatre space, museum, public square, part and an electronic music festival, i.e. venues where this has been performed before the eyes of an audience since 2017. She undertook her first curatorship practice with the programme La Cresta (dance and performance) at the TEA Tenerife Art Space museum between 2020 and 2021.
