Azkuna Zentroa presents The Roma Akademia exhibition with the works and projects of 45 artists in residence at the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome through the annual grant of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID).
This exhibition, curated by Jesús Donaire, highlights the programme’s multidisciplinary approach: from painting to photography, performing arts, research, cinema, architecture, theatre, literature, fashion and restoration. The common denominator of all the works is the artists’ interactions with the various cultural agents and the multiple realities of the city of Rome. Given the magnitude of the collection and the thematic diversity, Roma Akademia will be held in all of the Centre’s spaces including the Exhibition Hall, Lantegia. Laboratory of Ideas, the Atrium and the Mediateka BBK. The project also includes a catalogue of the exhibition describing the creative processes of the 45 participating artists.

Founded in 1873, the main purpose of the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, is to contribute to artistic and humanistic training in artistic creation and research.
Throughout its 147 years of existence, the Academy has been constantly renewing itself as a centre of artistic production and knowledge generation. It is a meeting place for creators who develop their projects somewhere between the tradition of its monumental complex and the constant innovation of a global and technological society. Nearly 1,000 residents have lived within its walls in Rome, building relationships through the permanent feedback that is one of its hallmarks.
For the past seven years, it has also received aid from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). Over time it has become one of the most important artistic residencies in Spain, similar to other internationally recognised centres of creation.
The exhibition brings together a series of works and projects carried out by 45 artists in residence during the 2018-2019 (Processi 146) and 2019-2020 (Processi 147) programmes at the Spanish Academy in Rome. The exhibition project stems from the annual scholarship programmes sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), ones of whose aims is to organise a collective presentation of works in different contexts.
Due to the circumstances surrounding the pandemic in 2020, which seriously affected the programming of cultural institutions, it was decided to combine the presentation of the works of the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 residents into one large exhibition which is being held in the Basque Country for the first time.
The projects to be exhibited at Azkuna Zentroa range from painting and sculpture to photography, industrial design, video, research, film, cinema, architecture, theatre, literature, fashion and restoration. There are many disciplines that coexist at the Spanish Academy in Rome, the common denominator being the interactions with the various cultural agents and the multiple realities of the city of Rome.
“Roma Akademia” is a co-production of Azkuna Zentroa with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome and the curator is Jesús Donaire.
