The origin of these districts, as in the case of Masustegi, lies in the informal growth that took place around Bilbao.

The migrants who reached these mountains, referred to as “those from no man’s land”, turned the self- neither entirely Basque nor entirely from the places of origin of their families - construction of their district into a work of collective composition.

That dispersed and open land of settlements echoes an image of the “Alhóndiga” rooftop, fallen into disuse: a piece of untamed land that seems to have been brought down from those nearby mountains.
