The central themes of my work are: power structures, gender, violence, social injustice and human condition. I am interested in understanding from drawing, the most recent history and the current news in Spain and other occidental societies.
Rome 2 chapters, my experience in the Academy:
1.- Origins of patriarchy. I was surprised by so many rapes of women represented in the arts (for example The Rape of Proserpina, Apollo and Dafne of Bernini or the biblical painting of “Susannah and the Elders”…) ___________________________
I focused on reviewing the representations of the historical bible of the “S. and the V.”. I found the feminine body had been represented by most of the male artists in two different ways: as a virgin or as a victim. In the representation of Judith and Holofernes the game of power is turned, and the woman wins, as vengeance. In history there have been so many ways to represent power, rape, and the woman. Female artists have taken a stance concerning the counter representation of the woman (Kiki Smith, Kara Waler…). How has the female figure been represented throughout history? How have I represented the female character in my work? What is my position there in? How may I use art to question power? This project initiates in Rome and continues in a Project for a Dutch museum.
2.- COVID-19 came and I couldn’t do this part of the research. Recently having arrived at the city, I had to be confined to my studio. I decided to do some research on a formal level of different techniques such as animation and graphic print. I worked around what was happening. One drawing a day. I worked with animation on the weekends, alternating with linoleum. I spent almost three months without being able to leave. Working in my studio. The last month I spent visiting and finishing the way I had wanted to begin.
