Azkuna Zentroa - The Mediateka provides services adapted to the needs of all kinds of public both online and face-to-face.
You can borrow publications, multimedia material and video games, likewise use computers and reprography resources on the different floors. The entire space is connected to the internet via the free Centre Wi-Fi system.
Worthy of mention is the decentralisation of the material loan and pick-up service via the “Inbox Mediateka BBK”, in Azkuna Zentroa Atrium. This automated system enables you to do these activities without entering the Mediateka and offers longer opening hours.

ARTXIBOAZ. DIGITAL CONTEMPORARY CREATION ARCHIVE
Artxibo AZ, the Azkuna Zentroa cultural programme digital archive, will be activated on 6th October. This tool designed for the comprehension of contemporary creation is set up from 3 angles, i.e. the “institutional archive”, which collects, classifies and disseminates artistic production occurring the Centre; “creation and mediation”, which offers the contents artists may use for their production and brings art to the public; and a “guarantee for the remembrance”, to become an archive for content of all kinds related to contemporary Basque creation.
The contents are divided into 11 communities and 31 collections which reflect Azkuna Zentroa´s programme lines and strategic hubs: visual arts, live arts, creation support, film and audiovisual, literature, media and publications, educational programme, radio, society, and test area.
All resources are catalogued using the Qualified Dublin Core, which enables total data interoperability with other platforms. In addition, resources are catalogued in Basque, English and Spanish.
The new platform enables visualisation and download of documents, such as posters, hall information sheets, leaflets, magazine pages, press dossiers, etc., and audiovisual material, such as photographs, audioguides, podcasts and videos. Moreover, Artxibo AZ is linked to the Mediateka BBK catalogue and contains a database with the profiles of artists and cultural agents related to the Centre.
To date Artxiboa AZ has catalogued over 200 activities with access to the over 6,000 files comprising the project cultural corpus.

INBOX MEDIATEKA BBK
The Mediateka BBK Inbox, a new automated book and return service is into service in the Atrium. This Remote Locker is located next to the Mediateka access so that users can make use of it every day of the week with longer opening hours. Returns will be periodically removed so that loans and reservations already picked up can leave room for the following requests.
This modular system pioneering in Spain has 3 locker modules in this initial stage, one for each operation, and with different sized lockers. In addition, it has a central screen to facilitate user identification to do such operations.

Through the online catalog
Most of the bibliographic collection of the Mediateka is freely accessible and lendable. The titles whose location in the online catalog is Deposit must be requested at the loan counters.
The home loan is carried out both at the self-lending equipment and at the information points. People up to 13 years old can only access the resources available for children and young people. From the age of 14 you can request the loan of all the materials that are available to the public.
There are three types of loans:
Home use:
Materials can be checked out at information points and/or using the self-checkout equipment. Each loan has a maximum number of items and a maximum number of days.
ADULTS
- Adult books: 5 books / 21 days
- Adult audio-visuals: 3 items / 7 days
- Adult audio: 3 items / 7 days
- Book+CD: 5 books / 21 days
- Adult computer files: 3 items / 7 days
- Children's books: 5 books / 21 days
- Children's audio-visuals: 3 items / 7 days
- Children’s audio: 3 items / 7 days
- Children's computer files: 3 items / 7 days
- Adult video games: 1 game / 7 days
Library materials can be renewed ONE TIME ONLY for an additional 21 days.
CHILDREN
- Children's books: 5 books / 21 days
- Children's audio-visuals: 3 items / 7 days
- Book+CD: 5 books / 21 days
- Children’s audio: 3 items / 7 days
- Children's computer files: 3 items / 7 days

Library materials can be renewed ONE TIME ONLY for an additional 21 days.

e-book lending and movie download service accessed via the Internet at E-liburutegia and E-film.

Interlibrary loan:
The purpose of this service is to enable users to obtain materials that are not included in BBK Mediateka’s collection by borrowing the originals.
With this service, users can obtain materials that may not be available in a particular library’s collection but are available at another. It is a way for libraries to supplement their own resources, subject to certain conditions and exceptions. You can consult the service rules here.
Holds
Only adults can place a hold on library materials, with a maximum of 2 items on hold at any time.
Holds can be arranged using BBK Mediateka’s online catalogue (OPAC) or in person at the information desks. BBK Mediateka staff will send a one-time notice to the borrower when the item is available. Once the item becomes available, a hold will be placed for two calendar days, after which the books will be offered to the next person in the queue or reshelved.
On hold items can be retrieved and returned at the reception desk on the third floor of Mediateka BBK.
The loan service between Azkuna Zentroa-Alhóndiga Bilbao Mediateka BBK and the rest of libraries included in the Basque Public Reading Network (BPRN) makes available to the public, through collaboration between the centres, those titles that are unavailable in the collection of one or other library, thus complementing the offer of each centre's own resources.
The conditions established for this service are:
- USERS
Anyone over 14 with the Mediateka BBK (AZ Card) or BPRN membership card without any active penalization (e.g. resulting from the delay in returning loans) may use the service.
- LOAN ARCHIVES
3 copies can be borrowed at the same time. Excluded from this type of loan are:- Novelties (copies less than 2 years old) and bestsellers
- Newspapers and magazines/journals
- Library archive
- Film and videogame audio-visual documents
In any event, it is the library which owns the requested copy who decides whether to send it or not.
- REQUESTS
- Requests can be made in person at Mediateka service points or by telephone through 944 014 014 indicating the reason for your call.
- BORROWING CONDITIONS
- We will send you an SMS on receipt of the book, after which you have 7 calendar days to come and pick it up. Should the books requested not be picked up within the set deadline without justifiable cause, you will receive a 5 day sanction impeding you from borrowing any documents. Books requested via this procedure are subject to the same loan policy as other copies. Once you have borrowed the book you have a 21 day return deadline with a renewal option, provided it has not been reserved by somebody else.You can only return the book to the 3rd floor information point.
- RESPONSIBILITIES & SANCTIONS
- The requester is at all times responsible for the material loaned. Therefore, in the event of loss or deterioration he/she must replace it. The sole exemption from liability is robbery on presentation of the corresponding document proving the same.
Should a document belonging to another library be lost, we shall follow such other library’s instructions.
BBK Mediateka has set up a permanent section with a collection in order to learn about the history of the videogame industry better. Here you can find out details regarding the design and programming of these developments or even borrow some of the most popular educational games. You will find a selection of these developments in the space provided on the second floor of BBK Mediateka. Please, consult the loan conditions at the information point located on the second floor.
You can download books to your eBook, Tablet or Smartphone at Mediateka BBK. The new digital book loan service allows you easy access to these contents from any computer via the eLiburutegia platform. In addition to the electronic books, movies and documentaries are also available to download.
In order to access the Digital Loaning Service, just go into the following link alongside holding a library card, either from the ‘Mediateka BBK’ or from any other library which is part of the Public Reading Network of Euskadi (RLPE). Remember that to be able to read digital books on your Tablet or Smartphone you must have the Adobe Digital Editions App installed, which will allow you to download them to your device. You can find the User Handbook which will guide you through the registration and installation of this freeware on the web www.euskadi.net/eliburutegia (Section: ePub Help). In order to visualize the film, no specific program is necessary as it will be streamed on the website.
Mediateka BBK offers all users with the Az or RLPE card the use of computers with public access to Internet and other computer or multimedia tools.
To use the computer equipment you must have the Az or RLPE card. To check connection data we may request you to identify yourself with your ID, passport or other identification document. You should bring both documents. Should the details not coincide you will be sanctioned pursuant to that established in Mediateka BBK Regulations and Rules of use.
Should you need to specifically use one of the Mediateka BBK computer resources (e.g. to print a boarding card), you are somebody on business in Bilbao, a tourist, etc., please go to an information point where you will be given a user key and password for this specific use.
COMPUTER TYPES
Mediateka BBK has computers for one time or reserved use. They are distributed in different spaces and designed for uses such as: catalogue consultation, accessing Internet, doing computer work, etc. The types of terminal available are as follows:
- Terminals for consulting the catalogue: They enable Mediateka BBK catalogue consultation, recharge credit to print, reserve computers or access your user profile. Use is free.
- Reservable terminals: This terminal allows equipment use in 1 hour period, maximum 2 sessions per day and always starting on the hour. In 12 of these terminals you can use Microsoft Office.
- Adapted terminals: Two adapted computers located on the second floor of the Mediateka and for preferential use by people with Functional diversity.
Sessions last 60 minutes maximum. A maximum of 2 daily consecutive or non-consecutive sessions. Maximum of 24 sessions per month per person. Session commencement times are hourly on the dot.
RESERVING COMPUTERS
Computers can be booked from the website, at the terminals available in Mediateka BBK, as well as at the information desks: reservations
Mediateka BBK users may photocopy documents bearing in mind Intellectual Property Law. Users are responsible for complying with current legislation.
Work documents may be printed from the computers provided you have credit in the printing system. You can top up your credit on any reservation terminal which has an e-purse (second floor). Credit is exclusively linked to each person and may only be used for the printing system established in Mediateka BBK. No expiry date.
In addition, Mediateka BBK has self-service photocopiers designed for exclusive use with the Mediateka BBK collection. The photocopiers are at the public’s disposal during opening hours and are always turned off 5 minutes before closing. Mediateka BBK customer service personnel do not keep change and the photocopier only admits the exact sum.
The cost of printing or photocopying documents is established in the Bilbao City Council tax ordinance regulating document issuance and delivery tariffs. Price is updated annually here.
Azkuna Zentroa provides users with access to Internet via Wi-Fi, free of charge, with a minimum bandwidth adequate for browsing, only in those areas of the Centre that are not managed by third parties.
Likewise, the Mediateka BBK has a large computer park intended for occasional or reserved use. They are distributed in the different spaces and intended for uses such as: consultation of the catalogue, Internet access, office work, etc.
Continuing with its line of work open to new media that favor learning and knowledge development, it also has a section linked to the world of videogames and other media that is equipped with a collection, equipment and materials that can be used in theaters and /or to be withdrawn on loan.
